Abstract

Several credit unions (CUs) in different countries have varying degree of restrictions and regulations to keep their operations in check. While some groups have rigid by-laws in place, others are yet to set any standard or rule for their members to follow. Thus, this material was developed by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) to compile, tackle, and document all the best practices and standard operating procedures being observed by credit unions across the globe.

Comprehensively, it discusses a wide range of relevant topics and courses on setting up, maintaining, and observing CU regulations such as prudential and operational regulations, administrative regulations, enforcement regulations, general accounting and audit regulations, deposit insurance, and consumer protection regulations. Each topic is covered by a particular section which is briefly introduced based on its importance and requirements for proper implementation. Furthermore, Model Regulations for Credit Union also offers an in-depth and cross-sectional reading on how countries compare and contrast on their organizational and legal regulations for CUs. This kind of reading aims to help starting and existing CUs to lay down or revamp their policies with the right and strong regulatory foundations which would fit according to the demands of their organization and their social and political environment.
