Unlike private companies or organizations, credit unions or CUs rely most of its operations and management with its members. Since it is largely running on the “trust” of its associates, there is a need to formulate, implement, and observe good governance systems that would strengthen the institution. With this regard, the Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions or ACCU has developed this guide to provide support for coop leaders in establishing good practices and policies for the members to follow. They believe that putting reliable and responsive cooperative policies would increase the credit union’s progress.
As intended by ACCU, this material will greatly benefit the individual and second level CUs on how to qualify reliable Board members that handle and settle affairs, and would set the path for the organization’s success through the times. Likewise, this guide also acts as a suggested framework for plotting out standards and protocols in a CU, including means of evaluating Board performance to ensure that the values of good governance are being upheld.
