COOP-NATCCO Party to Leaders: Start Preparing for 2025 Polls

Posted July 05, 2024

ILOILO CITY – Just less than a year before the 2025 elections, leaders of the COOP-NATCCO Partylist met for the COOP-NATCCO Partylist Congress and have issued a call on all co-op leaders to start preparing for the next elections.

The 2025 elections is scheduled for May.

According to Alex Raquepo, CNPL President: "The next elections is just months away.  That is very near and we need to start preparing!"

He also noted in his report at the Party Congress that CNPL got only 348,317 votes during the 2022 elections, which was good for only one seat in the House of Representatives.

The number of votes garnered by CNPL peaked at 931,851 votes in the 2010 elections, which was good for two seats.

Currently occupying the one seat of CNPL in Congress is former Barbaza Multi-Purpose Cooperative manager, Filemon Espares, who is now Vice Chairperson of the House Committee on Cooperatives Development and Chairperson of the highly controversial and sensitive House Committee on Ethics.

Like SACDECO, Barbaza MPC is the largest co-op in Panay Island and leads the digitalization of cooperatives in the Philippines.

Congressman Espares also gave his report to the National Directorate, saying that one of his priority bills is the amendments to the Cooperative Code of 2008.

The members of the COOP-NATCCO Partylist met in Iloilo City on December 9 and 10 for the CNPL Congress

The National Directorate - the body that decides the policies and directions of the Partylist --  comprises representatives in all regions in the Philippines, voted by member-cooperatives.  The ND also decides from among themselves who will be the next Representatives in Congress.

CNPL was established in 1997 as the political and legislative arm of cooperatives nationwide, after the passage of RA 7941 (Party List System Act).

Co-op leaders met on July 27, 1997 in Caoayan, Isabela resolved to form the CNPL for the first party list election in 1998

The Party List System is an opportunity to go beyond traditional politics, and champion the cooperative legislative agenda.

COOP NATCCO therefore is established, to protect the interest of the entire cooperative sector.

Raquepo is manager of the highly successful Sta Cruz Development Cooperative (SACDECO) in Ilocos Sur in Northern Luzon.
