#1coopnation in October!

Cooperators all over the country are enjoined to celebrate the Cooperative Month this October, culminating in the National Cooperative Day on October 20.

The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) issued on September 7 Memorandum Circular 2018-2 declaring said date as the National Cooperative Day in the Philippines.

In a meeting with co-op leaders in Congress last July, COOP-NATCCO Rep. Ben Canama said  all activities during the Month are to “1) Boost Appreciation of Co-ops, 2) Showcase the successes of the Sector, and 3) Present an issue that needs to be united upon.”

Theme for the 2018 Co-op Month is “Makabagong Kooperatiba para sa Kalikasan, Kapayapaan, Kaunlaran, at Sang Katauhan.”

Sub-theme is: "Sa Bawat Henerasyon, May Progresibong Rebolusyon; Rebolusyong Kooperatiba - NGAYON NA!"

A calendar of activities was set for the Month.

Tentatively on October 1, 250 co-op leaders will meet with President Rodrigo Duterte in Malacanang Palace to thank him for the retention of co-op tax exemption, present the achievements of the co-op sector and increase the CDA’s annual budget. However, Malacanang Palace has not confirmed the date as of posting.

October 3-5 in Davao City is the 14th National Cooperative Summit with the theme Overcoming Challenges, Succeeding Together Under One Apex.

On October 8, one of the Co-op Bloc legislators in Congress – House Committee on Cooperatives Chairperson Rico Geron and COOP-NATCCO Representative Anthony M. Bravo – will deliver Privilege Speeches in the House of Representatives.

The following day, on October 9, Senator Miguel Zubiri, who leads the Committee on Co-op Development in the Senate, will likewise deliver a Privilege Speech on the role of cooperatives in nation-building.

The month-long celebration, however, culminates with the National Cooperative Day on October 20.

This is aimed to be a simultaneous and nationwide celebration, where co-ops will gather in their respective Congressional District. The organizers of the National Cooperative Day celebrations determined that regional meetings would entail more travel expense on participants.

Co-op Federations, Unions, the League of Cooperative Development Officers of the Philippines, and the Philippine Cooperative Center will cascade the celebration to primary cooperatives and ensure maximum participation.

For the National Cooperative Day, co-operative stakeholders nationwide will gather at venues they will set within their respective Congressional Districts in the morning to follow a set program, and then engage in any kind of community service like feeding, cleaning, planting trees, or medical missions.

As a display of Co-op Solidarity, participants are encouraged to wear the "Integration Shirt" or their co-op shirt.

Cooperators are requested to take photos of their activities and post on Facebook with the hashtag “#1coopnation.”  This will facilitate collection of data in what is deemed to be a big nationwide event for cooperatives.

On October 21, the NATCCO Network and Excellent Peoples’ Multi-Purpose Cooperative will conduct the 1st Co-op Cup Chess Tournament at Alphaland Southgate Mall along EDSA in Makati City.  Said tournament will be a display of “Solidarity Thru Sports”.
